Artist's Description

La Perouse Pinnacle is the top part of an old volcano in the French Frigate Shoals in Hawaii. It is surrounded by numerous sandbars and a huge 20 mile long circular reef. From the side it is long... but from this angle, narrow. So many say it looks like a ship at sea. Coincidentally, it does have a history of being used during WWII by both the Japanese and the US, for its proximity to Pearl Harbor. Happily, it is now a national wildlife refuge.

About Karen Strangfeld

Karen Strangfeld

I'm a New England native, with a BA in Studio Art, Art History, Museum Studies. I've spent over a decade working at one of Boston's largest art museums, and now live out in a tiny town in northern central New England. My painting style is loose modern impressionist landscapes and cityscapes. I see my work as being similar to a novelist exploring a new character. A brushstroke goes down as a sentence, and the next one becomes more clear. I meet the character as I create it. And I learn a bit more about myself with each new work. I believe that a painting should be something that shows you something new every time you look at it. Whether about yourself, and your reaction to it, or just an element in the scene you hadn't noticed...
